Father*Capt. John Leonard (b. 1670, d. 1712)
Mother*Elizabeth Almy (b. 29 September 1663, d. 12 January 1715)

Family: Deborah Sheppard (b. 17 December 1700, d. after 1791)

Son*Thomas Leonard (b. about 1740)
Son*John Leonard (b. about 1740)

Biography

John Leonard was born about 1697 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. He and Deborah Sheppard were married on 19 May 1733 in Monmouth, Co., New Jersey. He died before 1785.
John Leonard was also known as John Leonard, Jr. On 10 Mar 1785, James and Catherine Woolley and William Woolley, their son, and Charity, his wife, deeded land to Deborah Leonard, the widow of John Leonard (John E. Stillwell, Historical & Genealogical Miscellany, Data Relating to the Settlement & Settlers of New York and New Jersey (1916), 4:279, and (1932) 5:444.).

On 21 Dec 1791 John Wooley of Shrewsbury, yeoman, deeded to Deborah Leonard of Shrewsbury, widow, 12 acres of land at Poplar Swamp, which, with more, had been conveyed to the said John 3 Jan 1787 by his father and mother.

Sally Toomey quotes marriage date as 17 Dec 1759 in Monmouth Co. and questions whether it could be this John, based on that date. Date of 29 Nov 1732 makes more sense.

-- MERGED NOTE ------------

Bill Barton: "JOHN LEONARD, Jr., born ca. 1700, probably married DEBORAH SHEPHERD of Monmouth 19 May 1733,[162] died before 1785. Deborah was born 22 Dec. 17__.[163] She was a daughter of Joseph & Rebeckah (Lippet) Shepherd. Joseph Shepherd's inventory was taken 14 Sept. 1753 by Andrew Winter & Nathl Leonard (see ¶ii. below). It amounted to £251/19/8.

In 1759 John inherited from his uncle Thomas Leonard (see ¶f. below) 640 acres of land on the northwest Branch of Cape Fear River in North Carolina (?) or New Jersey (?) near a place called Brumfiton.[164] (aka Brompton)

On 10 Mar. 1785 James & Catharina Woolley and William Woolley their son & Charity his wife deeded land to Deborah Leonard, the widow of John Leonard.[165]

On 21 Dec. 1791 John Wooley of Shrewsbury, yeoman, deeded to Deborah Leonard of Shrewsbury, widow, 12 acres of land at Poplar Swamp, which, with more, had been conveyed to the said John 3 Jan. 1787 by his father and mother, James Wooley & Catharine.[166]

John & Deborah (Shepherd) Leonard may have had a son THOMAS LEONARD of Crosswicks since Thomas Leonard (see ¶f. below) bequeathed "To Thomas Leonard of Crosswicks, son of John Leonard, my nephew, the house and lot in Kingstown where Martha Hide lives.?[167]"

Was he the John Leonard on the tax lists of Chowan County, NC, in 1721, and receiving a land grant of 301 acres on 1 Feb 1725 in Bertie Precinct, Chowan Co.? He had person sources.1 He and Deborah Sheppard were married on 17 December 1739 in Monmouth County, New Jersey.2

Henry Leonard was born about 1701 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. He and Lydia Wall were married about 1720 in Monmouth, Co., New Jersey. He died on 29 October 1772 at age ~71 in North Carolina. It appears he received a land grant in Rowan County, NC, in or about 1756. He seems to be the progenitor of the Henry Leonard descendants in Rowan County.

Note that several other Leonard families from other backgrounds were also in Rowan County at this time: Valentine Leonard from Germany, Joseph Leonard from Ireland and their descendants.
They supposedly had four daughters.
