Biography

Uriah Leonard was born on 7 March 1717 in Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts. He and Elizabeth Farley were married on 9 September 1736 in Billerica, Massachusetts. He died on 12 August 1766 at age 49 in Stoughton, Norfolk, Massachusetts. He was buried at Stoney Plain Cemetery in Taunton, Massachusetts.
According to ECL, he worked for Judge Zephaniah Leonard at the Hopewell Forge in 1764. In Judge Leonard's inventory of Uriah's estate, it showed that he owed 71 pounds 15 shillings and the house where he lived was put down in the inventory at 10 pounds. Uriah drops out of the Canton District tax list in 1739. He appears in Sharon in 1747 and stays there until 1751 and then disappears entirely. Taunton records show the death of Elizabeth, wife of Uriah, November 6, 1775. Uriah Leonard had person sources.1 He was christened in May 1717 in Norton, Bristol, Massachusetts.

Uriah and Elizabeth Leonard were ordered to appear at Cambridge March 19, 1743, in regard to the administration of the probate of Timothy Farley. Hazen in History of Billerica states that she married Jerathmell Bowers Jr. at Billerica March 17, 1735/6, but that seems wrong, given the probate case of her father.

Was she born in Stoughton or Billerica? OneWorldTree has her born in Stoughton. Elizabeth Farley had person sources.1

William Leonard of Taunton sold to his son Jacob 34 1/2 acres in Norton December 16, 1740.

Jacob Leonard sold his farm in Norton to John Wilde (his father-in-law?) January (?) 13, 1742. This would have been shortly before he died.

Since he died while his children were so young, there should be a court action to establish their guardianship.

Mary Wilde was born on 22 July 1721 in Braintree, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.1 Jacob Leonard and she were married on 12 October 1737 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.2 Seth Clark and she were married on 5 September 1744 in Norton, Bristol County, Massachusetts.1 She died about 1786 at age ~65 in Woodstock, Connecticut.
Was she born July 22, 1721 in Braintree or 1718 in Norton? ECL says Darius H. Leonard said on June 24, 1888, she married 2nd a Clark, and that is borne out by the Norton VR's. She was a Mayflower descendant of John Alden through her mother.

Note that her children by Jacob were young when he died. Were they raised with her children by Seth Clark?

A widow, Mary Leonard, was admitted to the Norton Church in 1743.

ECL: did she also marry (3) Seth John Hall in 1764? Answer seems to be "no;" she was alive for land transactions in 1783 in Woodstock, CT. Her son, John Clark, gave life use of the family homestead to "his honored parents Seth and Mary Clark." Mary Wilde had person sources.3

Biography

Jedidiah Leonard was born in 1730 in Easton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Sarah Baldwin were married on 28 April 1752 in Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey.1 He died on 16 May 1776 at age ~46 in Bolton or Vernon, Connecticut.2
Sarah may have been married before (Thomas Price) and had a number of children by him.

ECL says Jedidiah probably married Sarah Baldwin of Hanover, NJ, probably at the First Church of Hanover. There were a number of Leonards in Hanover, Morris County, NJ, including not only Stephen of the James line, but Benjamin of the Solomon line and their descendants. One must be doubly careful to keep the Leonard lines straight in Morris County.

Jedidiah Leonard and his wife became members ("renewed their covenant") of the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme 5 November 1759 and had their children Phebe, Eunice, Rebecca, and Asa baptized on the same date (per First Congregational Church records, CT State Library).

A Jebediah Leonard enlisted 8 September 1755, discharged 10 December 1755, Eighth Co., Capt. Harris, from CT Hist. Society Collections, Vol. IX, French-Indian War Rolls, Vol. 1, Vol. 2. He may also be the Jedidiah Leonard who served in Co. of Capt. Ellsworth, 1775.

A Jedidiah Leonard apparently lived in Bolton, CT, near Tolland. He and Sarah baptized all their children 5 May 1776, apparently just before he died. Info about Jedidiah from NEHGS Register, 58:197 and 59:213 and 60:201. Is this the same Jedidiah Leonard? Did they move from Lyme to Bolton? Was Jedidiah a stone-cutter? His son, Asa, seems to have been a stone-cutter in Stockbridge, MA, for some years, earning enough money at that to finance his purchase of land in Tioga Co., NY, and to move there.

Jedidiah's death is noted in the church records of Vernon, CT. He was 46 when he died. Jedidiah's will mentions only his wife, Sarah.

Jessie Deith from Illinois, a descendant of Jedidiah through Huldah, is researching this line and supplied the information on Hulda's descendants. Jessydeith@aol.com. 6 Sept. 2006.

Benjamin Leonard, a descendant of Jedidiah's son Asa, is researching this line and supplied the information on Asa's descendants.

Four children were baptized in Lyme, CT; 5 children were baptized in Vernon, CT; and 1 child died in Vernon, CT. ECL had no information on Jedidiah's children and had his death date as 1776. Jedidiah Leonard had person sources.3

Biography

Jonathan Stewart Leonard was born in 1740 in Easton, Bristol County, Massachusetts. He and Sarah Maria Dodge were married on 1 November 1764 in Granville, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia. He died on 4 May 1802 at age ~62 in Wilmot, Nova Scotia.
Was he born in 1735/36 in Easton, MA? There was a Jonathan Leonard born 29 July 1734 in Bridgewater to Joseph Leonard and Mary Packard (Solomon Leonard line) who was not this Jonathan. James Chilton Silver Book has him born ca. 1740, Lyme, CT (his wife was a Mayflower descendant). He was age 61 when he died in 1802. The Dodge Genealogy may have more.

He went to Halifax, Nova Scotia 18 Mar 1760 (NEHGS 28:414). According to ECL, he served in a Connecticut regiment at the siege of Louisburg prior to that. He sold his land at Annapolis, NS, and moved to Wilmot, Nova Scotia, where he built a saw mill. (Source: NEHGS, 1874, p. 413-15, "Massachusetts Soldiers at Halifax in 1759," A List of Capt. Josiah Thacher's Company in Col. John Thomas' Regiment. Landed in Halifax May 11, 1759. Capt. Josiah Thacher, Yarmouth, MA.)

More information about the family is in the History of Annapolis.

A descendant of Jonathan's now lives on his former property in Wilmot. He and his wife are buried there.

A synopsis of how Jonathan came to Nova Scotia, courtesy of Barbara Leonard Bishop, a direct descendant (2005):

In 1755 the British colonial government, in cahoots with New England settlers who were constantly clashing with the French and native peoples, deported its Acadian population. In 1758, Nova Scotia was given responsibility for governing the former Acadian area, clearing the way for New Englanders to come and take possession of these empty and fertile lands. The first shipload arriving on May 17, 1760. These New Englanders, as well as some from Germany and elsewhere, whom Nova Scotians call "Planters," eventually grew to 8,000 in a year or so.

Jonathan fought at Louisbourg in 1758. He went home and was discharged, but in 1761 he re-enlisted and was again sent to Nova Scotia. In 1764 he married Sarah Dodge in Granville Township, Annapolis Co., NS. He apparently came alone, and the ship's passenger list, on which he took passage, has not been found. All of the other Granville planters came from Massachusetts. Family tradition is that he came from Lyme, CT. He and his wife lived on land that her father, Capt. Josiah Dodge, gave them. He bought and sold land there in Granville.

When the flood of loyalists from New England began in the late 1770's and early 1780's, many of the Planters in Granville sold their properties and moved to the newly opened Wilmot grant. Jonathan ran his mill and inn here. His homestead overlooks the Annapolis River and behind the property is the site of an old Acadian mill. The village on the site was called "Paradise Terrestre" by the Acadians, and hence the current name, "Paradise."

Jonathan is mentioned in History of Annapolis, p. 228, first as applying for rights in 1777, and also: "...Jonathan Leonard left descendants who still occupy the lot assigned to him; and it was Leonard's hotel, at Paradise, where the Duke of Kent lunched on a fine Sunday, while on his way to New Brunswick, via Annapolis, in 1794, an event which has become a tradition to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren..." (History of the County of Annapolis by W.A. Calsek, 1897.) Jonathan Stewart Leonard had person sources.1
