The New York Gazette or the Weekly Post Boy, 15 Oct 1753: "To be sold at public vendue, on Wednesday, the 24th of October, Inst. at two o'clock in the afternoon, on the premises: a plantation in the township of Hanover, in the county of Morris, in East-New_jersey, containing 150 acres of land; there is on it a good dwelling house and barn, a young orchard, and a sufficient quantity of medow ground, the chief part of which is cleared; the said plantation is now in the possession of Paul Leonard, by whom a good title will be given for the same."
In "A History of Randolph Township," the list of deeds for part of William Penn's lands in New Jersey taken by Mr. Hampton ye 22nd February 1757 includes Paul Leonard, 433 acres. part of lot 4, 260 pounds. A William Leonard is also listed for 267 acres, part of lots 82-86, 90 pounds.
ECL: NJ Abstract of Wills dtd. September 26, 1787, Paul Leonard of Hanover: Administration is given to David Leonard, his son. His fellow bondsman was Moses Kitchel. He married (2) Abigail, who declined administration of his will. He wanted to leave his estate to James and Joshua (sons?), but the Morris Co. court apparently didn't accept his handwritten will. Witnesses to his will were Stephen and Moses Leonard (ECL notes: who were they? Answer: grandsons of Paul thru 1st wife and son Josiah). Will 684N. B. 29, p. 473. Int. 1787. Inv. 1787. Ren. 1787.
He joined the Hanover Presbyterian Church in Morris Co. on 6 March 1748 (Hanover Presbyterian Church records, Internet). He was overseer of highways in Morris Co. in 1740.
ECL mentions Adam, Daniel, Mary, James, "a child," Lidia, and Joshua and notes that there may have been other children.
GML notes Paul, soon after his father's death in 1743, settled on a farm in Alexandria, Hunterdon Co., NJ. His father died in 1732, per his will.
Stephen Rose Leonard's journal (1848) states that Paul had two brothers, Silas and Elijah, who were occupied in the foundry business in Massachusetts and removed to New Jersey, locating themselves in the vicinity of Rockaway Neck, Morris Co., where Paul Leonard reared his family of seven children: Josiah, James, David, Phebe, Lydia, Huldah, Diadema. The latter two appear to be children of Paul's father, Stephen. He fails to mention Daniel, Adam, Joshua, and Mary, so there would have been nine altogether.
ECL or GML insert 117A has Josiah4, Stephen3, James2-1. But Josiah is not the son of Stephen, but of Paul. Josiah was born in 1738, while Stephen died in 1732.
One genealogy says that Paul and Abigail had two children: Adam and Daniel. But Abigail would have been in her 40's then and had had 12 children by Edmund Crane.
Chapter 20. Leonard Ancestry of the Jansen Daughters. Virginia C. Jansen, 22 Feb 2002, Hist314 WS/TC: "After his wife's death, Paul Leonard married Abigail, widow of Edmund Crane who died in 1762 leaving eleven children. The widow Abigail Crane was born Abigail Kitchel in 1717, a sister of Phebe's mother Mary Allis Kitchel and Moses' father Joseph Kitchel. Paul and Abigail then moved to Alexandria twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ, and had two more children, Adam and Daniel Leonard. (But Paul and Mary already had had children named Adam and Daniel. Had they died?) Adam would have been born 1763/4 in Hunterdon Co., NJ, and Daniel would have been born aft. 1765 in Hunterdon Co. Abigail would have been in her mid-40's. Neither Paul's nor Abigail's wills indicate any children together.
Hanover Presbyterian Church records has an unnamed daughter of Paul baptized 8 April 1750. Paul is listed as a property owner in Hanover twp. in 1752, along with David Leonard. Paul Leonard had person sources.
